What do new, visionary strategies for fashion in the 21st century look like? The European Fashion Award – FASH 2009 – is searching for answers under the title “New Diversity”.
FASH is open to design students of all disciplines in the fourth

Running Order Show will be the first european B2B event for the Running segment
Messe München is holding the Running Order Show in the M,O,C, Munich Order Center from June 29 till July 1, 2008. "With that, we are providing the sole european B2B platform for the running segment, which is the driving force of sporting goods retail sales with approx. 20 percent of sales," Tobias Gröber, Head of ispo Group, explained.
The trade fair will be held in
collaboration with the LEX Group, the leading
retailers' association for running
and walking. "We are looking forward to working together with Messe München.
Many of us often visited ispo with pleasure in the past. We expect that the
Running Order Show will provide new stimuli for positioning ourselves on the
market in the coming years," according to Christian Bossow,
Managing Director of the LEX Group.
The Running Order Show
is divided into the areas of shoes, clothing, accessories, triathlon, Nordic
Walking, nutrition, running analysis methods and materials management.
Sports Source Europe will bring suppliers and exhibitors in Europe together
With Sports Source Europe, which will take place parallel to the new Running Order Show at the M,O,C, from June 29 till July 1, 2008, Messe München GmbH is creating a professional and independent platform in Europe for the growing sourcing segment in addition to the Sports Source Asia, which started successfully in 2007.
"At our trade
fairs, an increasing number of exhibitors and wholesalers with their own brands
have spoken to us about an independent sourcing platform in Europe.
It is a lot more efficient for them than visiting individual sourcing
markets," Tobias
Gröber explained. "Because
sporting goods are becoming increasingly more fashionable and more oriented to
lifestyle, they are increasingly subject to short-term trends. In addition to
Asia as the leading production region for sporting goods, sourcing markets at
the doorstep of Europe such as North Africa and Eastern Europe and especially Turkey and Portugal are becoming increasingly
more important."

Enthusiastic feedback from exhibitors and industry
“ispo winter once again proved its leading position among trade shows for the sporting goods and sportstyle industry with 2,026 exhibitors and 64,000 industry visitors,“ comments a very pleased Manfred Wutzlhofer, Chairman of Messe München. Exhibitors from 47 countries presented their product innovations and latest collections to an international crowd of industry professionals from 113 countries.
This mean 70 percent of retailers came from foreign countries. Klaus
Baumann, General Manager Northern Europe, Camper: „We were very happy with the
fact that visitors were very international, which allowed us to generate new
contacts with foreign retailers.” Manfred Wutzlhofer believes that the
increasing international character of the show is an opportunity for exhibitors
to tap into new markets.
Exhibitors and retailers alike praised the
ispo’s customized trade show concept for the sporting goods and sportstyle
industry. Ingo Jost, General Manager Central Europe for Hummel: “ispo put
together an exciting brand portfolio and provides visitors with a very
comprehensive overview of the diverse segments.” This wide selection is very
well received by retailers and retail associations. The expanded guest services
provided by Messe München throughout the public transportation system, was also
highly appreciated, in particular by the many foreign visitors whose travel
arrangements were considerably simplified.
Many anniversaries at ispo
There have never been as many anniversary celebrations as at the ispo winter 08. The traditional Norwegian brand Bergans of Norway honored its hundredth anniversary at a special ispo party. Furthermore, the Finish ski apparel and outdoor brand Luhta, and U.S. lifestyle brand Converse both celebrated their 100th birthday.
Ski and trekking pole manufacturer Leki marked its 60th year in
business, and outdoor specialist Columbia its 70th. The WFSGI (World Federation
Sporting Goods Industry) celebrated its 30th anniversary. All celebrants
received a special honorary plaque, personally presented by Manfred Wutzelhofer,
Chairman of Messe München GmbH.
The running and lifestyle brand asics
received a special commemorative plaque in honor of its late company founder
Kichahiro Onitsuka.
Crowds flock to outdoor_ispo
The outdoor segment which covered four exhibition halls and was accessible via a designated entrance, attracted more than 20,000 visitors. Hans Overduin, Bever Zwerfsport b.v.: “The atmosphere at the show was very good. The outdoor area with its designated expo area was particularly well exposed and provided a very good ambiance.”
The atmosphere was outstanding. The outdoor industry very much
appreciated the snow ice & rock summit, the Outdoor Get Together, and the
Boulder Cup. Outdoor exhibitors highly praised the outdoor exposition concept at
the ispo winter, the organization of the trade show, as well as the exceptional
service provided by the ispo team.
Sportstyle breaks into all segments
The interplay of sports and lifestyle continues to get closer. “The demand in the sportstyle segment is particularly high. The composition of the industry visitors shows this very clearly: the trend that more and more retailers and buyers from the sportstyle and footwear segment come to the ispo continued at a remarkable rate,” explains Manfred Wutzlhofer.
Many manufacturers offer their
own apparel lines in addition to their classic winter sports selections. For
Robin Puplitt, Retail Marketing Manager Europe for Burton, the ispo has the
appropriate platform for both segments: “ispo winter 08 was a very powerful
trade show which set free a lot of positive energy within retail and industry.
It was crucial for us to present hardware in hall A1, athletic apparel in A 2,
and our fashion apparel collection at the ispovision, each in its proper
environment.”
Breaking News from Dupont
During ispo, Steward Daykin, the new technology manager for Dupont, gave an interview about the latest developments. In a dialogue with Brian Morris, industrial designer, he informed the public about a renewable source and how it could affect the designers.
Dupont is able to offer a high performance with a renewable source. The
environmental benefit without affecting the functionality of the product should
make the designers love it. You can find the complete interview here.
Record number of entries and happy winners at Volvo SportsDesign Awards 2008
The long wait was worth it – last Tuesday the ICM Munich hosted the award ceremony for the 4th Volvo SportsDesign Awards 2008 at the Volvo SportsDesign FORUM. The coveted international design award under the motto “EcoDesign – Form follows Sustainability” was presented to entries from France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Sweden, and the U.S.A.
More than 300 renowned international
companies and designers sent in their innovative EcoDesign concepts entries for
a chance at this most important SportsDesign award. Speaking for the jury,
Andrej Kupetz, General Manager of Rat für Formgebung, praised the “for a
sporting goods design award unusual variety of projects and international
character of the entries. The sporting goods industry has advanced a step from
an ecological point of view. The message of EcoDesign was understood. In the
future ecology and design will have an even more important role in the agenda of
designers and the industry.”
An international jury met on January 8th,
08 at the idyllic Gut Herrmannsdorf near Munich to select 35 nominees in seven
award categories as well as the favorites. The experts used the following
criteria to judge the entries for ecological and sustainable design:
functionality, design, degree of innovation, ergonomics, form and manufacturing,
material, production, distribution, product lifecycle, recycling, and
application.

the ispovision. The platform for Sportstyle’s premium segment experienced a
visitor record. Bernd Closmann, General Manager of Fore!titude: “At the
ispovision the whole world came to see us on just 16 square meters of booth
space. We even closed many orders, in particular with international retailers.”
Winter sports industry on an upswing and with focus on sustainability
Despite considerable challenges winter sports are on the upswing. The mood was very positive among exhibitors as well as retailers. As expected, orders at the show concentrated on the growth segments outdoor – with support from trend sport touring – and Sportstyle. Surprisingly, the board sports segment also showed its strength.
This year’s ispo winter’s focus topic was the use of renewable
and ecological materials and the production of sustainable sporting goods. At
the Volvo SportsDesign Forum hundreds of interested participants took advantage
of the program of expert presentations and workshops. The Volvo SportsDesign
Award with the motto “EcoDesign – Form follows Sustainability“ registered a
record with more than 300 entries, and proved that sustainable products do not
have to forego attractive design and functionality.
Unique snowboard action at the 2nd edition of Quiksilver – DAS RAIL presented by ispo
The contemporary art museum and Munich city landmark, ‘Haus der Kunst’ once more delivered the perfect backdrop for one of the most amazing snowboard contests in Europe. The rider list of this Snowboard Handrail Contest read like the Who’s Who of progressive urban freestlye and included 22 riders from 10 nations. Cheered to victory by more than 3000 visitors on-site, Lucas Magoon from the US took first place, followed by Max Legend (CAN) and Hans Åhlund (SWE).
For the second time, Quiksilver and ispo joined forces to create an
urban snowboard experience of its own. The marble pillars of the
‘Haus der Kunst’ venue in the city center of Munich
provided a unique backdrop for a spectacular handrail session. 22
internationally acclaimed riders were showing a new level of urban snowboarding. The jam format kept pushing
the riders to their limits on the 11m long cast-iron steel rail at the
renowned art museum
After the 90 minute Jam Session, 8 riders - Hans Åhlund (SWE),
Max Legend (CAN), Florent Marot (FRA), Lucas Magoon (USA), Sami
Sarenpää (FIN), Fredu Sirvio (FIN), Gulli Gudmundsson (IS)
and Dan Brisse (USA) - qualified for the final session to compete for
the prize money of EUR 9.000. An additional EUR 1.000,- was allocated
to the riders in the interactive “The Moneysession” –
spectators applause decide which of the riders cash in directly. Sami
Sarenpää (FIN) was clearly the public’s favourite as
well as being a big contender for the final session. Unfortunately he
fell and could not continue the session.
In the following final it was a close call between the eight riders as
the riding level was high. With the last trick of the evening, Lucas
Magoon delivered the best trick, a perfectly stylish bluntslide 50/50
to 180 across the whole 27-stair handrail. Second place went to Max
Legend from Canada with a backside lipslide, and Hans Ahlund took home
third place.
The “Quiksilver – DAS RAIL” event was followed by a
great night at the Onboard Aftershow Party. DJ Colas from France
delivered nice tunes until the Pressemitteilung early hours and put the
icing on the cake the second edition of “Quiksilver – DAS
RAIL” presented by ispo.

The hub of the ispo event was an exclusive charity raffle benefiting the ‘Wings for Life’ foundation for bone marrow research.
National and international stars as well as many of Messe München’s business
partners contributed to the elegantly choreographed charity raffle. Among the
raffle gifts were a number of extremely valuable prizes valued at up to 10,000
Euro, donated prior to the ispo by several very generous ispo exhibitors. In the
end, more than 6,500 Euro were donated to the charitable foundation ‘Wings for
Life’, founded by Heinz Kinigadner.

and guests had a great opportunity to win some premium prizes.
The
highlight of the evening was the drawing of the five grand prizes: a ladies’
leather jacket from the designer collection “Converse by John Varvatos“ valued
at US $ 600; a sightseeing flight through the Alps in the Tommy Hilfiger
Helicopter; a custom-tailored winter wedding suit or dress for groom or bride by
Matador valued at 4,000 Euro; an exclusive weekend trip for two to the Volvo

Greeting from Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Environment Minister of Germany, for the VOLVO Sportsdesign Forum at ispo winter

Greeting from Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Environment Minister of Germany
The products we are buying and how we are using them not only affect our economic and social situation but the
well-being of our environment. The consumption of private households alone is
responsible for more than a quarter of the total greenhouse gas emissions in
Germany – the production of those products not taken into account. You don't
have to be a prophet to imagine the environmental burden that could follow, once
China, India and other aspiring countries adopt our consumptive lifestyle. Thus,
changing the patterns of production and consumption has become a challenge that
faces every corner of our society – from the sphere of politics down to the
everyday decisions of the individual.
On an international scale, the
United Nations’ „Marrakech Process“ aims at changing unsustainable ways of
consumption and production by assisting countries in developing a long-term
framework of programs. On a national level, the Ministry of the Environment has
initiated a dialog process. The main goal is to take existing approaches, for
example to focus on private and public spendings, and to take them to the next
level – with a solid penetration of the market with sustainable products, the
top runner principle (the product with the best energy efficiency sets the
standard which others must follow), environmental labels such as the Blue Angel
or other policies. Another idea is to develop new, practice-oriented initiatives
in cooperation with individual social groups.
The focal point in all these
efforts remains the individual consumer, because his or her everyday decisions
have far-reaching consequences for the environment. Aspects such as the
transport distance is as crucial as the reparability or recyclability of a
product or the consumption of water or energy. A high-quality ecological
consumption is necessary.
From an environmental
perspective, the design of a product is of the utmost importance. About 80% of
the environmental impact of a product is determined during the design stage.
Therefore, product innovations can be a great tool to help reducing the
environmental burden. In order to achieve this goal, there needs to be an
integrated process that takes into account the total lifetime of a product with
all the different stages of production and utilization.
The public concern for
environmental issues is greater than ever, and so are the chances of
establishing sustainable products in the market. Many people are aware that
their decisions are important – and that they can help to protect our planet and
to limit the effects of climate change to a certain extent. And they are willing
to contribute within their individual scope. The trend towards a „sustainable
lifestyle“ changes our patterns of consumption and our markets. This is an
important development for the sports goods branch, since these are the products
that are supposed be used in an intact nature.
I'm very happy to see that this
year's ispo is host to a forum for EcoDesign, which is dedicated to the topic of
sustainability in the field of industry and sports design. I wish you a
successful event.

ispo BrandNew Award: and the winners are...
The jury of the 17th ispo BrandNew Awards faced a tough challenge this year. 261 entries from 26 countries represented about 13 percent more products than last year, which is a new record. Among the entries were a multitude of products with eco-friendly characteristics as well as accessories. For the first time ever, consumers had the chance to influence the selection of winners by voting online for their favorites. Following tests, demonstrations, analyses and in-depth discussions among the jury, the 31 finalists and eight winners were finally selected:
"Advansa® Overall Award: Quantya® FMX Dirtbike" A powerfully accelerating
dirtbike made in Switzerland – without exhaust. After a two-hour charge with
energy from an electrical outlet the bike has enough power to spend 3 hours on a
Motocross trail. Quiet, no exhaust fumes, yet incredibly powerful. The bike
should be approved for road use in 2008. www.quantya.eu
"YKK® Hardware Summer Award: Hillracer Cross®" A go-cart-like summer
sled is guided via weight shifting and foot control and also offers plenty of
safety features: wheels will not roll backwards, with hydraulic brakes, and an
inertia brake. With the help of a special bar the Hillracer can be transported
uphill on t-bar lifts. The summer sled is TÜV tested and certified. www.sports-tech.de
"DuPont Hardware Winter Award: Ski Mojo" Ski-Mojo from Great Britain
applies shock absorbers to skiing. Out of sight under the ski pants a
spring-loaded “arm” is mounted between the ski boot and the lower part of the
thigh. It reduces the load on quadriceps and knees. The model features a
selection switch for “Walk” and “Ski” mode. www.ski-mojo.com
"Coolmax® Sportswear Award: ion-mask™" Extremely water-repellant
ion- mask™ coating keeps feet dry – even if submerged in water. With the help of
ionized gases – also called “plasma” – footwear and apparel is coated with an
extremely thin layer of the material. P2i in Oxford developed the technology.

"Creora® Style Award: Eleonore de Ruuk" Eleonore de Ruuk knows how
to integrate hoods everywhere in her collection, no matter whether in dresses,
belts, or even backpacks. The mix of street wear and fashion is cleverly
accomplished; yet wear comfort is never sacrificed. www.eleonorederuuk.com
"Nilit® Style Accessories Award: Nat-2™" Women’s hearts beat faster
when they see the new 2-in-1 shoes by Nat-2. A zipper on the sole quickly turns
a trendy sneaker into a summer slide, and vice versa. www.nat-2.eu
"YKK® Hardware Accessories Award: Snowpulse" The new avalanche
airbag rescue system is available either with a backpack or can be integrated
into one. The air-based system is activated with the pull of a strap, and within
seconds the user’s head and neck are protected by a 150 l. At the same time, the
inflation of the bag creates a hollow space around the head. www.snowpulse.com
"Askin® Accessories Award: Myway®" An ancient concept rediscovered:
Catharina Wikström was inspired by the technique of ancient documents. Resort
maps, printed on durable paper, rolled and placed into two small plastic tubes,
are easily unrolled even with gloves on. Small enough to hide in a jacket
pocket. www.daylightagain.com
ispo Group joined forces with the Team Joachim Franz
In the last few years the team, founded by Joachim Franz in 1999, has
managed to build up a level of conveyance for the difficult topic of
HIV/AIDS through sport. "Sport communicates, develops and reflects!"
The Team Joachim Franz follow this motto every year with a new idea
that always hit the headlines.
In the last few years the team, founded by Joachim Franz in 1999, has
managed to build up a level of conveyance for the difficult topic of
HIV/AIDS through sport. “Sport communicates, develops and
reflects!? The Team Joachim Franz follow this motto every year with a
new idea that always hit the headlines. Six successful, but completely
different expeditions have been organised and carried out. How much
strength must people have that can follow such a path?
The ispo Group stands for sport, but also for all the values
that are communicated by sport, so it was only a matter of time before
the ispo Group and the Team Joachim Franz joined forces, a
fact hailed by the highest instances as a ?best practise project?.
The Team is partner of the United Nations UNAIDS and started in 2007
under the patronage of the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.
We are very happy that we can present our partnership and future
expeditions within the framework of the ispo events in the
coming years. We start at the ispo winter 08, in the intersection of
hall A4 to A5, with a review of the past years and expeditions.
ispo winter 08 fully booked!
ispo winter 08, to be held from January 27th through 30th, 2008 at the New Munich Trade Fair, is already following in the footsteps of the success of the winter 2007 event. Visitors to the winter trade show will be treated once again to the latest trends, developments, and innovations by the national and international sporting goods industry in 16 halls totaling 180,000 square meters of exhibition space. The special focus of the event will be on new, more transparent hall segmentation.
In Focus: Sustainability - Did you know...
...that the trade fair grounds of the New Munich Trade Fair Centre are based on a pioneering ecology concept, with which we are able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 7,000 tons per year? Among other things, this concept includes spacious landscaped areas of 125,000 sq. m. - 20,000 sq. m. of trees, 70,000 sq. m. of bushes and 35,000 sq. m. of green areas on roofs - as well as 10,000 sq. m. of created ecological compensation areas. >>more information
